Schuylkill County Obituaries for August 6th, 2024 (3)

Joseph A. Macenka of Coaldale passed away Monday, Aug. 5, six weeks short of his 101st birthday.

Born Sept. 20, 1923, he was the husband of Dorothy Soley Macenka. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on July 16.

Joe took great pride in his faith, his marriage and the couple's two children, Anna Marie Mantey, who lives in Matthews, N.C., with her husband, John, and recently retired from a career as a physician's assistant, and Joseph, an author and communications professional who with his wife, Jody, resides in Richmond, Va., and Avon, N.C.

His parents, Nicholas and Mary Macenka, and his siblings, Nicholas, Mary and Helen, all predeceased him.

Joe was a 1941 graduate of Coaldale High School, where he was a multisport standout athlete. Though offered a football scholarship by University of Pittsburgh Coach Charles Bowser, Joe recognized that the United States was at war and times were tight. He turned down the scholarship. Bowser himself provided further evidence of just how difficult the wartime environment was. The coach left Pitt after the 1942 season to take a commission with the U.S. Navy.

Joe, still 17 when he graduated high school, went to Maine, where he worked until the end of World War II in a factory building fighter planes for the United States and its allies. That set the stage for a career as a civilian employee of the federal government that spanned two decades.

After his marriage in 1955, he and Dorothy spent their early years living in Hometown, where they were members of St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Coaldale before moving to Hershey to raise their children. While in Hershey, they joined Christ The Savior Orthodox Church in Harrisburg but returned often to Coaldale to worship at St. Mary's.

Joe spent the majority of his career at New Cumberland Army Depot, where he retired 43 years ago. Dorothy was in the manufacturing industry and retired from Hershey Foods Co. in 1988, when the couple returned to Coaldale, where they remained active members of St. Mary's.

Though he loved many sports, golf held a special place in his heart. He was a longtime member of White Birch Golf Course in Barnesville, where throughout his retirement years he won numerous club championships in his various age groups and was able to walk 18 holes several days a week up until he was 97.

The family is grateful for all the support but wants to offer special thanks to Cheri Santore, Lisa Williams and Terry of the St. Luke's Hospice staff, the staff of Maple Shade Meadows and Teddy Bortnick and Father James Weremedic for their overwhelming kindness and generosity.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua with The Very Rev. James Weremedic officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Orthodox Cemetery, 370 East White Street, Summit Hill. Call Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or online at www.cancer.org or to Maple Shade Assisted Living, 50 East Locust Street, Nesquehoning PA, 18240.

Arrangements are being handled by the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation services, Inc., Tamaqua
